“A strange girl”      By Farooq Sarwar
He was very impressed by the strange girl and was unable to understand what he is supposed to do. The marriage of his cousin was solemnized; it was the night of henna, the young girls were pasting the henna on the little finger of the right hand of the groom and his friends and he was sitting beside the groom. Numerous numbers of women were gathered around them and all the ladies were in good, beautiful and clean charming dresses.

Meanwhile, young girls were equally singing marriage songs on hand drums and they were also playing mouth organs artistically. It was the moment when he saw the strange girl for the first time with her smiling and friendly face towards him. Really, the youthful beauty was quite charming and it seemed that a fairy queen emerged in the ceremony. Really she impressed him through her good looks and pleasant behavior.

After this the next program was the dance and the dance was going on in a green lawn surrounded by the red roses. There was a rush of women and children in the courtyard, clapping on the dance. The dancing was going on in a circle in the green field on drum and music pipe playing by the musicians of the village.

It was a mixed traditional dance of young girls and boys. He was also participating in the dance and luckily the astonishing beauty was next to him. At this juncture, when the eyes of both met he received a good response from her. Now he was under the impression that it is an amazing dream, but despite this he was very conscious to take steps in appropriate manners.

At midnight, according to custom the Henna would have been taken to the village of the bride. Now a giant procession of the women, young girls and children were moving with joy and noise towards their destination. It was the darkness. He was further accompanying the procession with the other young boys in the family. They were holding the lamps and it was also their aim to protect them from wild dogs and any kind or danger.

Now again the fairy queen looked at him with her smiling face and then stepped forward towards the singing girls. At this time, the strange girl was beating the drum artistically and her singing voice was also impressive. It was the song in her mouth,
“Oh my lover, don’t touch me, I am the bud of a flower, otherwise my leaves will be spread”.

The next day, when he asked his mother with the intention that he will choose the strange beauty for him in order to marry her, that dear mum, do you know her?

Mom replied with her smiling face that yes, my sunny and lovely boy. It was the next question by him that does she have any husband? Or is she engaged. The mother again replied with smiling face, not my dear son.

He knew the art of painting too. Now he painted a gorgeous sketch of the fairy queen. Amazingly, he wept ever before her drawing instead of smiling, because his mother told at the time of his questions that she is infamy and a blood sucking witch because she became widowed four times quicker and now even an old widower dose not wants to marry her because nobody wants the death!
